Obituary for Joseph Sotterly
Joseph Francis Sotterly, of Hobe Sound, FL passed away August 17, 2017 at the age of 95. He was born in Orange, NJ, September 14, 1921. Joseph graduated from Seton Hall College where he was a member of the Golf team and was manager of the College Book Store and the Campus Shop, an Ivy League Clothing Store.
During the late 30’s he was a leading amateur bicyclist and a member of the team representing the USA in the Pan American Games.
During World War II, he served as a physical instructor under Commander Jack Dempsey. He later served on the USCG Cutter Oak and aboard the Cutter Icarus and finished his service in the USCG Intelligence Department, heading the Fingerprinting Department.
After leaving the service he was President of J. F. Sotterly & Associates insurance brokerage company in Montclair, NJ.
An avid golfer, he won eight tournaments in the Northeast; he was a member at various times of five country clubs, the last was Essex County Country Club.
Joe loved all animals, especially dogs.
In 1978, he married the love of his life, Carol Russo and they resided in NJ for over twenty years before moving to Florida.
His sister in-law Marion Russo, his nieces Gayla Meise and Jean Conway were very dear to his heart.
